WHAT IS MIGRAINE?
Migraine is one of the most common problems affecting almost 10% of the population. They are due to changes in the brain and surrounding blood vessels. It typically last from 4 to 72 hours and vary in frequency from daily to fewer than one per year.
HORMONES, chronic FATIGUE and STRESS are two most significant factors that cause migraines.
The symptoms vary from each person to person and not all of them have be present at the same time. It usually consists of five stages:
Prodrome: A variety of warnings can come before a migraine. These may consist of a change in mood (for example, feeling "high," irritable, or depressed) or a subtle change of sensation. Fatigue and muscle tension are also common.
Aura: In some people, changes in the cortex area of the brain cause changes in their sight, such as dark spots, colored spots, sparkles or ‘stars’, and zigzag lines. Numbness or tingling, weakness, and dizziness or vertigo (the feeling of everything spinning) can also happen.
Headache: The migraine pain involves head pain which can be quite severe. It is typically of throbbing nature and it can be aggravated by movement. The headache is usually one sided especially when the attack first starts. Nausea or vomiting may accompany the headache.
End: headache usually subsides with sleeping or resting with closed eyes in a dark room.
Postdrome: Loss of appetite concentration problems or fatigue may be present after the attack has ended.
How does acupuncture work?
Acupuncture can help in the treatment of migraine by regulating the nervous and circulatory system. By stimulating nerves located in muscles and other tissues, acupuncture leads to release of endorphins and other neurochumoral factors and changes the processing of pain in the brain and spinal cord.
How many treatments will I need?
In the first consultation, an treatment plan is made in order to evaluate the individual needs. On average 10-12 treatments are needed. Treatments are spaced out twice a week in the first 3 weeks and the following sessions are scheduled weekly.
How much does it cost?
Individual sessions or the treatment plan options are possible. The treatment plans include the initial consult and can be used through out the whole year, including the maintenance sessions.
